Today is all about getting inspired to garden and teaching our kids how important gardens are! ❤️
If you have joined me for monthly themes before, you might notice that the layout for these blog posts is a little different. I thought it would be helpful to try organizing everything in the order that I would do these activities with my kids! For this month, I’m utilizing a lot of videos for kids from YouTube and I like to start off our time together with these videos, so it made sense to me to start off these blog post activities with these video links (instead of at the bottom of the post like before)! Feel free to still jump around or pick and choose what you want to do with your kids though!
I also am trying to make these themed days a little simpler this month. I know that at the end of the year, everything can start to drag and feel harder to finish (for us anyways!)…so I didn’t want to make these themed days feel like too much! Every day will still have at least 1 video, 1 book, 1 themed snack, and several activities to choose from though.
Are you new to these monthly themes? No worries! You can join our FB group and print out the May School Calendar to get started! Just scroll to the bottom of this post and pop your email in so I can send it to you!
Keep reading below for Start a Garden Day activities and printables!
Day #1. Start a Garden Day!
Here is what we have planned for today! 🙂 Did you want to download and print out everything for this month all at once? You now can! Grab the Garden School Activity Pack here!
This 78-page PDF bundle comes with every printable you’ll need for this month PLUS extra printables like vocabulary cards, grocery list, master supply list, suggested reading list, and a teacher guide for each day! It is great for saving time by downloading and printing everything all at once! You’ll also receive a May School bookmark and punch card for your kids to use as they move through each themed day. 🥰
Activity Ideas
IMPORTANT NOTE: Most of these printable activities will be FREE for you to download, but only during Start a Garden Day! So, make sure to download them even if you are going to do Start a Garden Day later in the week – that way you can still snag them for free. If you could leave a review behind afterwards, that would be amazing too! THANK YOU!! 🥰❤️
#1. Introduction to Starting a Garden!
I recommend watching this great introductory video on starting a garden. This video from the SciShow Kids Channel gives a brief overview on the topics we’ll be focusing on this week!
#2. Garden Playdoh Mats (Includes Short Poem)
Print out this PDF and laminate your choice of a garden or garden box layout. Have your students use playdough to form veggies and other plants in their garden!
#3. Paint a Garden or Garden Box (Includes Short Poem)
Print out the black and white version of the download above onto cardstock and have your older students paint a garden instead of doing playdough!
#4. Why Should I Garden? Notebook for Kids
Use this interactive notebook to help your kids think about how important gardens are! There are two different notebooks to choose from, depending on if you want primary or regular writing lines.
#5. Themed Snack Idea
While you read (or listen to) the books below, have the garden themed snack idea below! Today I’m going to cut some sliced cheese into the shape of a flower and set it on top of some crackers!
#6. Read or Listen to a Book!
(Note: Everyone has different book standards! I highly suggest skimming through any books before reading them to your kids, just to make sure it aligns with your family values first) 🩷
While you enjoy snack time, wrap things up with a garden-inspired book! You’re welcome to read any of the suggested books in the Garden School bundle, but at our house today we’ll be reading, ”We Are The Gardeners” by Joanna Gaines.
If you were unable to grab the book from the library or store, here is the read aloud option on YouTube!
Do you have older kids? I suggest having them read 1-2 chapters from, “The Secret Garden”!
I hope that you and your family had a wonderful time learning together today! If you need to print out the May Calendar still, drop your email below and I’ll send it right over!
